SUMMARY:Behind the Headlines: Sherman Park One Year Later
DESCRIPTION:Last August\, two days of conflict in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood captured the attention of the country. Violence erupted after a young black man was shot and killed by a young black police officer. Police in riot gear faced off against protesters who threw rocks\, bottles and bricks\, fired shots and set businesses on fire. While the fatal shooting was the breaking point\, Sherman Park residents say anger and discontent had been building for years in a neighborhood marked by high unemployment and related problems. One year later\, what has changed?\n\nWhat:  The Milwaukee Press Club is bringing together experts to explore the inside story on what’s happening now in the Sherman Park neighborhood.\n\nWhen:  Wednesday\, August 16\, 2017\, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\n\nWhere:  The Wisconsin Black Historical Society\, 2620 W Center St. Milwaukee\, 53206\n\nPanel of experts: (listed alphabetically):\n\n \tVaun Mayes\, Community Activist/Founder of We All We Got\n \tAlderman Khalif Rainey\, 7th District\, City of Milwaukee\n \tLaura Richard\, Sherman Park Resident and blogger\n \tJoAnne Sabir\, half of the team behind the Sherman Phoenix\, an entrepreneurial hub being developed in Sherman Park\n\nGuest experts will respond to questions from a media panel\, followed by audience participation.\n\nSupporting Sponsor:\nTransportation Development Association\n\nCost and Registration:\nThe cost to attend is $20 for MPC members\, $25 for non-members.  Lunch is included.
